Theatre Pedagogy and Interculturalism
Course Objectives: The main objective of the course is for students to understand how meeting of theater in education with the concerns, needs and challenges created in the modern multicultural environment of the 21st century. The course aims to understand the ways in which both the theoretical background and and the practices of the theater pedagogical phenomenon meet the theoretical ones approaches, goals and practices of the different models of interculturalism education. The main objective is not only theoretical training but also experience of these practices so that students can negotiate contemporary issues themselves related to the "inclusion" of the different in its different versions. The aim is to build, through practical and theoretical training, identities theater educators who will transform the educational process into dialogue not only verbal communication but also physical expression within the fantasy context of the theatrical phenomenon. Finally, the course aims to acquire design skills and implementation of theater-pedagogical programs for topics that can be included in the context of intercultural education, each time taking into account the different ones conditions such as age, individuality, group dynamics. In this way the students will be able to design and implement the corresponding programs in groups of different composition bases of lifelong education.
Learning Outcomes:
Initially through the theoretical review students will understand the socio-political conditions that led to the need to form a separate scientific branch for the acceptance, understanding and communication of different personal and social identities not only as "school" but also as " lifelong' education. In this context, the students will realize that from the above conditions, on the one hand, the need was created for the restructuring of the institutional framework, the educational process and the pedagogical science with the aim of responding to the diversity and different needs of the students. On the other hand, they will understand how these socio-political conditions led to a change in the theatrical phenomenon leading to the creation of new types of "applied theatre" whose main themes were oriented towards socio- political issues such as racism, poverty and racial discrimination. Through this historical review in connection with the study of the historical dimension of the development of theater in education as a branch of special interest, they will understand the reasons and the context of meeting theater with the educational process as an active way of learning to live and transform social problems that are consistent with the orientations of intercultural education. They will be prepared with the necessary theoretical framework concerning intercultural education on the one hand and theater in education on the other. They will experience through theater-pedagogical workshops the treatment of "intercultural interest" issues and in connection with the theoretical training on theater-pedagogical techniques they will be able to apply the same techniques with the aim of strengthening the intercultural skills of the participants. They will familiarize themselves with the theoretical background of the construction of theater-pedagogical programs through the method of didactic scenarios, they will learn in practice sociometric methods with the aim of creating a sociogram of the school class and they will study the methodology of action research so that they can evaluate and research the results of their programs. Finally, they will be able to plan, implement and evaluate an integrated intercultural theater-pedagogical program, taking into account each time the different composition of the group they address and the different socio-emotional goals that are set each time. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
• To be aware of the socio-political conditions which led to the need to transform the educational process, the pedagogical science and the theatrical phenomenon in order to promote the needs of the students or the public respectively, promoting the "demand" of pluralism. • To understand, on the one hand, the context of the formation of intercultural education, as well as the context of the inclusion of theatrical techniques in the educational process, so that they can finally understand the reasons and purposes of the convergence between them.
-To acquire a sufficient theoretical background of the definitions, purposes and techniques associated with both intercultural education and the theater-pedagogical phenomenon in order to have the necessary theoretical training for the application of theatrical arts with the aim of strengthening
the students' intercultural skills.
• To experience in practice theatrical techniques related to the cultivation of intercultural skills in order to process through the theater-pedagogical process issues related to racism, immigration and perceptions of "otherness" in its different forms.
• To be able to design and implement a theater-pedagogical program aimed at intercultural education based on the theory of the didactic scenario, to understand the needs of the group to which they are addressing each time by mapping their relationships through a sociogram and to evaluate
the degree of fulfillment of the objectives through action research techniques.
